Welcome to the needle felting lesson: Piano. Thank you for sharing this journey with me. This lesson was originally recorded in July 2024.
Felt a Piano
Rich Black Hues & White Piano Keys
This illustration began as a lap project for a car ride when Adam and I went to Belfast, Maine for a day (without kids in tow). The entire day was just lovely! With the basic shape of the keyboard in place, as well as the initial white keys, I start the video lesson layering in a true black over the navy blue to crate a rich, dynamic black hue for the piano. I then show you the steps to felt the white piano keys.
Forming Black Piano Keys
In this video lesson, we portion out and felt the black piano keys into place.
Time-Lapse Felting Video

Felting Black Piano Keys
Here is a short time-lapse video showing you the process of forming black piano keys. I’m finally getting confident enough in the process of making time-lapse videos to make them a standard part of each new lesson!
Image Gallery: Forming White Piano Keys
For those who prefer to study still images to learn techniques and steps in a process, here are the piano photo galleries! I tried something new this month, placing my camera overhead and using voice control to snap pictures as I worked. I hope the white keys and black keys galleries are useful to you in your learning journey! Enjoy!

Hi, my name is Hillary Dow. A few of my many hats include mother, wife, traveler, outdoor adventurer, author, family chef, marketing professional, felting artist in Maine, and oh so many more. I write children’s books illustrated with my wool creations. I picked up my first felting needle about five years ago and it wasn’t long before I realized I had finally found MY medium! Like any labor of love, I simply keep going to learn more while honing my skills. It is such a thrill to be a part of helping someone develop their skills and CREATE artwork.
