One contrasting color for the bow

Welcome to the needle felting lesson: Leona Bow. Together we’ll work throughout the two-step process of developing your very own felt hair bow as seen on Leona’s character in the illustrations of my children’s book, Flock of Rock! Thank you for sharing this journey with me. This lesson was originally recorded in February 2025.
Felt Hairbow Introduction
Forming Your Bow
The first of our two steps is to form your bow using one section of wool. I am using a blended batt, which makes it easier to start with a consistent amount of wool from one corner of the bow to the next.
A little Timelapse
With the size of my bow, it took me about 45 minutes to get to the size and shape I was happy with. Since the process is repetitive I’ve sped up this clip to triple time.
Adding the Purple Wrap
The second and final step of making your bow is to add the center wrap. I like to use a different color so it adds a contrasting detail but you could also use the same color as the rest of the bow.

Meet Your Instructor
Hi, my name is Hillary Dow. A few of my many hats include mother, wife, traveler, outdoor adventurer, author, family chef, marketing professional, felting artist in Maine, and oh so many more. I write children’s books illustrated with my wool creations. I picked up my first felting needle in 2019 and it wasn’t long before I realized I had finally found MY medium! Like any labor of love, I simply keep going to learn more while honing my skills. It is such a thrill to be a part of helping someone develop their skills and CREATE artwork. Thank you for joining me!
