Prepping a Wool Base Layer for Needle Felting
step by step tutorialMaterials List
Felting needles
Sturdy foam or wool pad
Prefelt cut to size
Prefelt strip for hanging loop
Core Wool

Forming the Base Layer
Like an oil painter might begin on a stretched canvas, we’re going to prepare a thick base layer. By layering core wool onto a sheet of prefelt we will then paint our landscape onto a base that is sturdy and ready to hang on the wall once we’re done.
Step 1 Layer the Core Wool
Step 2 Attach the Hanging Loop

Now that you’ve built up a prefelt with core wool to create a sturdy, thick base layer with the wool loop already felted to the back, you’re ready to create your artwork knowing that when you’re done the piece will be instantly ready to hang on the wall! The addition of core wool to make the prefelt thick also keeps your corners from folding down due to gravity and gives any 3D elements you may add more structure to stay securely held in place.

Meet Your Instructor, Hillary Dow
Hi, my name is Hillary Dow. I am the author, illustrator, and founder of Binding Tales. My books are illustrated with my wool creations. The woodland fairyland of Lichendia® is being brought to life by transforming the wool of sheep happily raised on Maine farms into needle felted works of art. With stories inspired by imaginative adventures in our home state of Maine, and drawing on talents throughout our creative economy, we’re bringing Lichendia® from farm to bookshelf. It is such a thrill and honor to inspire imagination and creativity in others. I look forward to connecting and sharing this creative journey with you!
